The Everyday Market Tote is worked in one piece from the bottom up: a rectangular single crochet base, sides in linen stitch (a dense, low-stretch woven texture), and handles built into the top band. You get gauge, dimensions, every stitch count, sizing guidance, optional lining and reinforcement, and care instructions.

  • Worked in one piece: no side seams
  • Gauge, finished dimensions, and stitch counts throughout
  • Linen stitch sides that hold their shape
  • Built-in handles, no sewing required
  • Resizing formula, lining, and strap reinforcement

Also included in the Easy Crochet Bundle ($14.99 for all five).

Materials, gauge, and size

  • Worsted-weight (weight 4) 100% cotton or cotton blend, about 450-500 yd (410-460 m). Buy one extra ball from the same dye lot.
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook, or the size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch markers (at least 5), tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure
  • Optional: 1/2 yd (0.5 m) of 44 in (112 cm) wide cotton fabric for a lining; 1 in (2.5 cm) cotton webbing for strap reinforcement
Gauge (after light blocking)
StitchGauge over 4 in (10 cm)
Single crochet in rows16 sts and 18 rows
Linen stitch in rounds16 sts (8 sc + 8 ch-1 spaces) and 18 rounds

Gauge matters for the finished size. With more stitches per 4 in, your bag will be smaller; try a larger hook. With fewer, try a smaller hook. A firm fabric matters more than an exact match, because bags stretch under weight.

Finished size: about 12 in (30 cm) wide, 4 in (10 cm) deep, and 11.5 in (29 cm) tall, not including handles. Handles are about 15 in (38 cm) long for hand or forearm carry.

Linen stitch in the round

Linen stitch alternates (sc, ch 1). On each new round, the sc goes into the ch-1 space below and the ch 1 skips over the sc below. The result is a dense, woven-looking fabric that stretches much less than plain single crochet.

This pattern uses joined rounds: each round ends with a sl st into the first sc and begins with ch 1 (which does not count as a stitch). Keep a marker in the first sc of each round.

Questions

Can I use acrylic yarn?

You can, but acrylic stretches more under weight. Cotton or a cotton blend gives the sturdiest bag.

Can I sell bags I make?

Yes, you may sell finished bags you make by hand. Please don't share or resell the PDF.

How will I receive my files?

Once checkout opens, you'll get private download links after your payment is confirmed. Links expire after 24 hours; if one expires, contact us and we'll help.
