This little five-petal flower is one of the best first projects for working in the round. It uses only chains, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitches, and it's finished in two rounds. Make one in about 20 to 30 minutes, or a whole bunch for a garland.

Materials

  • Medium-weight (worsted) cotton or acrylic yarn in two colors (one for the center, one for the petals), or one color throughout
  • 4.5 mm (US 7) or 5 mm (US H-8) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and scissors

Finished size: about 2 to 2.5 in (5 to 6 cm) across in worsted-weight yarn. Size varies with your yarn and tension, and gauge isn't important for this project.

Stitches used (US terms)

  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • magic ring: an adjustable starting loop (explained below)

Making a magic ring

  1. Wrap the yarn around two fingers so the working yarn crosses over the tail.
  2. Insert your hook under both strands, catch the working yarn, and pull up a loop.
  3. Yarn over and pull through the loop on your hook to secure it. This chain does not count as a stitch.
  4. Work your first-round stitches into the ring, over both the loop and the tail. Then pull the tail to close the center.

The pattern

Five-petal flower

Worked in joined rounds. Do not turn.

Round 1
In a magic ring: ch 1, work 10 sc into the ring. Pull the tail to close the ring. Sl st into the first sc to join. (10 sc)
Color change (optional)
If using a second color for the petals, fasten off the center color and join the petal color with a sl st in the same stitch as the join.
Round 2
*Ch 2, 3 dc in the next st, ch 2, sl st in the next st; repeat from * 4 more times. (5 petals) The final sl st lands in the stitch where you joined Round 1.
Finishing
Fasten off, leaving a 6 in (15 cm) tail. Weave in all ends on the back of the flower.

Optional leaf

Simple leaf

Row 1
Ch 8. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in the last ch. (7 sts) Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew the leaf to the back of the flower.

Tips for neat petals

  • Count Round 1 carefully. Exactly 10 stitches gives you five even petals.
  • Keep the chain-2 at each side of a petal relaxed. Pulled tight, it makes the petals cup.
  • If your flower curls, give it a light steam or spritz with water and pin it flat to dry. For acrylic, hold the steam above the flower and never press the iron onto the yarn.

Ways to use your flowers

  • Sew onto a hair clip or brooch back
  • Stitch onto a plain beanie, tote, or everyday crochet bag
  • Join several with a long chain to make a garland
  • Use as a gift topper instead of a bow
