What you'll need

Straight from the pattern's materials list.

  • Crochet hook, 5 mm (US H-8). Comfortable for medium-weight yarn and most hands. If your hand tires quickly, choose one with a soft ergonomic handle.
  • Smooth, light-colored medium (weight 4, worsted) yarn. About 100 g (roughly 170 to 220 yd) is plenty for every exercise in this guide.
  • Small scissors.
  • Tapestry needle: a blunt needle with an eye large enough for yarn, used to weave in ends.
  • Stitch markers: locking markers, or safety pins, to mark the first and last stitch of a row.
  • Tape measure for checking size and gauge.

Easy Crochet Starter Guide · first 2 sections

Welcome

Crochet uses one hook and one continuous strand of yarn. Every stitch is built from the same two motions: wrapping the yarn over the hook and pulling it through a loop. Once those motions feel natural, every pattern is just a combination of them.

Work through this guide in order. Each section builds on the one before, and the practice swatches at the end bring everything together. Short daily sessions of 20 to 30 minutes build muscle memory faster than one long weekend session.

Your starter toolkit

You need only a handful of inexpensive tools to begin:

Questions

Is this the same as the free beginner articles?

The free articles introduce the basics. The guide goes further, with every core stitch, turning chains, pattern reading, three practice swatches, troubleshooting, and a printable checklist, all in one place.

Do I need any experience?

No. It starts from the very first slip knot.
